Nones: The Past, Present, and Future of Nonbelief in Canada

We were joined by Sarah Wilkins-Laflamme, an associate professor in the department of sociology and legal studies at the University of Waterloo and a co-founder of the Institute for Religion, Culture, and Societal Futures (IRCSF), in the summer of 2024 as a guest on our three-part podcast series Nones: The Past, Present, and Future of Nonbelief in Canada.

Her research explores social trends in religious identities and behaviours while emphasizing how different elements of religion shape the social attitudes and actions of individuals. It provides important knowledge that illuminates our understanding of North America’s changing social landscape and the growing shift towards secularism in Canada and the US. Sarah Wilkins-Laflamme is an associate professor in the department of sociology and legal studies at the University of Waterloo in Ontario. She specializes in the sociology of religion, quantitative methods, immigration, race and ethnicity, political sociology, as well as social change.

Her books include None of the Above: Nonreligious Identity in the US and Canada, co-authored with Joel Thiessen and published in 2020 with New York University Press; Religion at the Edge: Nature, Spirituality, and Secularity in the Pacific Northwest, co-edited with Paul Bramadat and Patricia Killen and published in 2022 with British Columbia University Press; and Religion, Spirituality and Secularity among Millennials: The Generation Shaping American and Canadian Trends, published in 2022 with Routledge.
