A Call to Action: Defending Humanist Freedoms in an Increasingly Hostile World
Dear Members of Humanist Canada,
The world is rapidly changing, and not always for the better. The 2024 Freedom of Thought Report from Humanists International paints a stark picture: across the globe, humanists, atheists, and freethinkers continue to face discrimination, persecution, and, in some cases, severe punishment—including imprisonment and even death—simply for expressing their worldview. This is not a distant problem, but a pressing issue that demands our immediate attention.
This year’s report highlights alarming trends:
- The rise of authoritarianism and religious nationalism in several countries has increased restrictions on freedom of expression and belief.
- Blasphemy and apostasy laws continue to be enforced, silencing those who dare to question or leave religion.
- Humanist activists, writers, and advocates face threats, violence, and imprisonment for their commitment to secular values.
- Even in democracies, hard-won secular protections in education, healthcare, and public policy are under threat.
As humanists in Canada, we are fortunate to live in a society where we can openly express our views. But we cannot be complacent. We only need to look south of our border to see the travesty of human rights being trampled upon, freedom of speech being attacked, and LGBTQ2+ rights being rolled back, all by the new US regime and its sycophants.
The fight for human rights, secularism, and freedom of thought is far from over. We must:
- Stand in solidarity with persecuted humanists worldwide.
- Advocate for the repeal of blasphemy and apostasy laws in international forums.
- Support those seeking asylum due to religious persecution.
- Defend secularism in Canada, ensuring that our own institutions remain free from religious interference.
Humanist Canada is committed to these efforts, and we invite you to join us in raising awareness, taking action, and supporting those at risk. Remember, the fight for freedom of thought is not just a global issue but a human issue. Together, as a collective force, we can make a significant difference.
Together, we can make a profound difference. Let’s stand together, advocate for change, and defend the rights of all humanists. The time to act is now.
